Icarus 2 Redux WIP23 by 2753Productions Icarus 2 Redux WIP23 by 2753Productions
Tweaking the lighting here, it's extremely hard to have a scene 'lit up' when it's supposed to be in constant shadow behind the shield ;)

Started modeling the airlock (forward, starboard side near the shield - it has the lights on it) and it is about 90% complete.

Excellent job bro! I think is better than your previeous ship. ;)
What you mean by hard to lit up when its in constant shadow? Being behind the shield is like being in the dark so all lights will have their own illumination. The sunlight has no effect on them. Why is the lighting hard.

Thank you very much! Well - the lighting effect I am trying to get is 'similar' to what they had in the movie... but trying to get some of the same effects within Cinema 4D instead of with postwork... not as easy as one would think... it's a careful blend of cold deep dark space and lighting just enough to see the structure of the ship, but not really more than that. The lighting in the movie was burned in separate passes. I am attempting to get it done in one pass... really that is just part of an exercise for me. I pride myself in the fact that I very very rarely use any postwork effects on my 3D renders. I try to get the desired effect within the program itself. In Vue as well. In some ways, trying to do it that way forces you to learn a bit more about the software ;)

Oh sure! Examples are hard to come by as there is so much darkness in the movie concerning the ship - the IMDB is here: [link]

Ship examples:

Probably the best reference you will find is in the many copies of MPC's VFX Technical Breakdown about Sunshine:

Several interviews and the "making" of Sunshine, including an interview with Director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire...)

I see what you mean. I think in such a situation you need to trade in a lot of light intensity from the ship side of the shield. Bear in mind that the scene needs to be much darker, meaning that you will lose a lot of detail. For instance in one of the examples the ship side has visibly zero details. Only the lights are visible and a silhouette from the ship.
Environment lighting should almost be zerod out. Did you use GI? You might want to consider turning it off or make disk twice as bigger or even bigger than the shield and hide from camera but it will still calculate in the scene, contributing to the darkness behind the shield.
The light from the other side needs an overblown effect you also might want to consider disabling linear workflow to achieve the overblown effect. Just some ideas ;)
Doing good mate. Make a beauty out of it. Already is tho. :)

Thanks - nope, no GI, I rarely ever use GI in a space render due to no atmospheric gases to scatter the light like it does down here ;) I am in the process of building the larger shield now which goes in front of what you see here, and of course has it's own lighting which will affect this portion of the ship, thus I will have to come back and adjust the lighting yet again on the people part lol. Jeez this is a challenging model both in respects of detail and lighting. It took MPC's modelers over a year to create the ship. So far I have in this less than a month ;) Currently the sunlight is overblown and set at I think around 3500% intensity - much of the movie takes place within Mercury's orbit - real close to the sun. Even though I rarely use postwork in my renders I will end up creating some flare reflections on parts of the rim of the shield at certain angles.
